What is a GIF? How does animation work?

A Graphics Interchange Format, also known as a GIF for short, is a map of dots that was introduced in 1987. It is on-screen images that are able to move around. GIFs are used in many different ways. They can store low-color sprite data for games, they can be used for small animations and low-resolution film chips. It also includes data compression. GIFs are also more effective for scanned images such as illustrations because it is limited to 256 colors. They are compressed to reduce transfer time.
Animations are created by using a computer to "give life" to static images. By quickly running through a sequence of images, a computer can appear to make static objects move.
